Cycling as a Tool for Unlocking Mobility in African Cities
African cities are facing unprecedented mobility concerns arising from sustained population growth and urbanization in the face of infrastructure deficits and limited resources for development. In the midst of the above, the climate crises, road fatalities and injuries are intensifying as a result of motorization. Furthermore, many cities are locked due to congestions, poverty is intensifying as a result of transportation costs and residents are at the receiving end. For the rural and suburban poor whose’ children and especially the girl child girls cannot access services due to unaffordable transport and millions are out of school, the story can change.
The bicycle represents the potential game change in the midst of all the above, if given the opportunity. It is on this note that the workshop is organized to address such questions as; how can we strengthen political will to achieve cycling cities; what examples exist to on the continent to drive home the argument that a cycling Africa is possible and how can the bicycle be a tool for empowerment?
